Behind the Nightly Drone Performance

Choreographing three hundred lights above an indoor nave

Franchise Freedom began as a study of flocking behaviour — the way starlings move as one body without a single leader. Bringing that same choreography indoors, under a fourteen-metre roof, meant re-engineering the piece’s flight software almost entirely.

Each performance is calculated in real time: no two evenings play out identically, though every one follows the same emotional arc, from tight formation to a wide, scattering release above the audience.

The museum’s technical team runs the full flight path through a safety simulation every morning before doors open, checking for drift in the building’s air currents caused by the HVAC system.
